Ferritin is the stored iron in the body and the best indicator for a type of iron deficiency. Symptoms may include weakness, lethargy and fatigue. This test will also check for haemochromatosis, when the body has an overload of iron. This can cause fatigue, abdominal pain, joint pain and inflammation of the liver. Useful for those on weight management plans or those who need to monitor cholesterol levels more accurately. This test checks the total level of cholesterol in your blood as well as ratios of good-bad cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides.

Total cholesterol is a measure of the total amount of cholesterol (good and bad) in your blood. HDL are known as the good cholesterol which your body needs to remove excess cholesterol from the arteries. High levels of LDL are a risk factor for heart disease as it deposits excess cholesterol onto the artery walls. Triglycerides are the main type of fat found in our body. Bad fats convert to triglycerides and a consistently high level will increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Testosterone Check (Finger prick test)

Testosterone is a hormone found in both men and women at varying levels. It plays an important part in libido, mood, brain, energy, bone, fat distribution, muscle mass, vascular system and sexual functioning. High levels of testosterone can affect fertility in women.

Testosterone levels fall during the day therefore it is important to take the blood sample in the morning.

Testosterone affects men and women in different ways. High levels of testosterone on women can indicate polycystic ovarian syndrome, which affects 1 in 5 women. Low levels in women are found near their menopause time where there is also a decrease in oestrogen, causing low mood, low energy, reduced sex drive and fatigue.

In men testosterone is key in muscle mass, bone, energy, brain and sexual function. Levels are shown to decrease in men around the ages of 40-50 years. It is stimulated by luteinising hormone which provides more complete insight.

Liver Health Check (Finger prick/Phlebotomy)

This is a great test to check healthy liver function. It is especially useful for those on medication or those worried about liver damage from excessive alcohol consumption. This test includes key biomarkers liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT), albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma GT, bilirubin, total protein and globulin.

Fats, protein and alcohol is broken down by the enzyme ALT in the liver. Therefore these levels can be raised by overconsumption and consistently high levels may indicate liver damage.

Albumin is a protein made in the liver and associated directly with nutritional health and liver function. It is also used to transport calcium around the body, therefore is an important marker for bone health.

The ALP enzyme is responsible for liver function and breaking down bone. It is affected by diet and lifestyle factors such as smoking and drinking. Raised ALP levels can be an indication of problems with the liver or bone health. ALP levels can be kept within healthy range by good diet and exercise.

The gamma GT (GGT) levels are tested to check for any injury to the liver or associated bile ducts. Drinking too much alcohol can raise GGT levels.

Globulin is a type of protein made by the liver and immune system. Raised levels are usually associated with infection or disease. They are vital for good health.

Total protein levels are checked as part of a healthy liver check as low levels may indicate problems with the liver or poor diet. High levels are often associated with dehydration. It is essential to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep a healthy liver.

Omegas 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids that are not made in the body, therefore must be obtained through diet or supplementation. It is important to keep the ratio of these within balance otherwise there can be an increased risk of heart disease. Omega 3 is predominantly found in oily fish and can help to reduce the risk of heart disease.
